Living abroad for free in exchange for work?

-When I was in the Virgin Islands I was talking to a tour guide about how she got settled there, and she said that there was thing where you travel somewhere and work for a family, and you get to live there for free. Does anyone know what that is called or what organization it is? Thanks!
