What do you need to do to live abroad for a year in Spain?

-After highschool, me and a friend want to live in Spain for a year before college. Would we be able to join programs or could we just go and find a shittty apartment to live on our own and find jobs at the local supermarket and experience the people and just make friends and have fun? Bc so far that's our plan.
